Best. Day. EVER! Today Sara Raasch, author of the Snow Like Ashes trilogy and the newly released These Rebel Waves, is here on the blog to share a bit about her latest book and more! Don’t forget to read more about These Rebel Waves after the interview! You can grab a copy today (no waiting is the BEST)!

About Sara Raasch

Sara Raasch has known she was destined for bookish things since the age of five, when her friends had a lemonade stand and she tagged along to sell her hand-drawn picture books too. Not much has changed since then — her friends still cock concerned eyebrows when she attempts to draw things and her enthusiasm for the written word still drives her to extreme measures. Her NYTimes bestselling SNOW LIKE ASHES trilogy is available now and her upcoming pirate fantasy, THESE REBEL WAVES, releases August 7, 2018. None of those feature her hand-drawn pictures.

All About Sara

You wrote a book! That’s pretty awesome. Why don’t you tell us a bit about what inspired These Rebel Waves?

The initial idea for THESE REBEL WAVES came from a late night geology class and a single sparking term: “stream piracy.” Google it — it’s a real geological thing! But I heard “RIVER PIRATES” and the rest is history!

Introduce us to your main character!

There are three POV characters in THESE REBEL WAVES: Adeluna “Lu” Andreu, who is an ex-soldier fighting to keep peace post-revolution; Devereux “Vex” Bell, an outlaw and all around snarky, sassy delight; and Benat “Ben” Gallego, the Crown Prince of the country that warred with Lu’s island.

Walk us through a day in the life of Sara Raasch.

Wake up around 7:30, usually thanks to my offspring. Get ready (ponytail, basketball shorts, nothing fancy here), make breakfast for myself and said offspring. Entertain offspring until lunch, coerce offspring into watching Elena of Avalor (cuz I think I’m more into that show than he is), put offspring down for a nap, and use those two (hopefully) hours to write, or catch up on emails, or anything I squish in.

Lots of aspiring authors out there. Any advice for them?

Keep moving forward. The only difference between a published author and an unpublished one is perseverance.

I know asking someone’s all-time favorite book is a loaded question so what’s your current favorite read?

I just got CIRCE by Madeline Miller and I love it already! She’s a master of simple, intense prose and deliciously deep character histories.

Alright, the ultimate question: why should we read your book?

If you like rebels fighting for their freedom. If you like snarky pirates. If you like twisted magic. If you like dangerous, complex politics. Then you should read THESE REBEL WAVES!

Fun Stuff!

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Author. Mom. PIRATE.

Your characters are sent into the Hunger Games. Who wins?

Lu. By a long shot. Vex would likely make some sort of joke that gets him killed by another player. Ben would try to make peace with everyone, and ultimately get killed. But Lu would take no prisoners, have no mercy, and just dominate.

A famous movie producer wants to make your books into movies and they want you to cast your characters. Which actors/actresses make the cut?

Bobby Morley as Vex (YUM); Jessica Parker Kennedy as Lu (she’s so good in Black Sails!); Ben Barnes as Ben (they even have the name symmetry!).

You just won America’s Got Talent. What’s your talent?

Sarcasm.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee!

Best ice cream flavor ever?

Graeter’s oreo cheesecake ice cream. It will change your life.

Favorite quote?

I have the quote “I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night” tattooed on my back. It’s from the poem The Old Astronomer to His Pupil, and I love the poetry of holding onto good things even through darkness.

What is one piece of advice you would tell everyone?

This ties in with THESE REBEL WAVES, but I would encourage people to question what they believe. To research, and discover the truth, and not just accept the way things are.

Adeluna is a soldier. Five years ago, she helped the magic-rich island of Grace Loray overthrow its oppressor, Argrid, a country ruled by religion. But adjusting to postwar life has not been easy. When an Argridian delegate vanishes during peace talks with Grace Loray’s new Council, Argrid demands brutal justice—but Lu suspects something more dangerous is at work.

Devereux is a pirate. As one of the outlaws called stream raiders who run rampant on Grace Loray, he pirates the island’s magic plants and sells them on the black market. But after Argrid accuses raiders of the diplomat’s abduction, Vex becomes a target. An expert navigator, he agrees to help Lu find the Argridian—but the truth they uncover could be deadlier than any war.

Benat is a heretic. The crown prince of Argrid, he harbors a secret obsession with Grace Loray’s forbidden magic. When Ben’s father, the king, gives him the shocking task of reversing Argrid’s fear of magic, Ben has to decide if one prince can change a devout country—or if he’s building his own pyre.

As conspiracies arise, Lu, Vex, and Ben will have to decide who they really are . . . and what they are willing to become for peace.
