Write a letter to your favorite author
Dear Tamora Pierce,
You’re not my favorite author anymore.
Probably not what you expected to hear right off the bat, but it’s true. To be honest, my favorite author changes as I change, shaped by my life in the moment. No, instead, you’re something much more. You’re the reason I love to read as much as I do today.
My mother gave me your books as a birthday present when I was a kid: the Song of the Lioness and Immortals quartet. In truth, she only bought them because the fourth Immortals book, The Realm of the Gods, had a dragon on the cover and I’m quite the fan. These were my first introductions into fantasy and chapter books. Maybe it was the right time, the right me, but I fell in love. With Tortall, with Alanna and Daine and their adventures. It all clicked.
It’s been about 13-14 years now. I still re-read your books. My copies have been beaten and worn simply from love and use. Hopefully I can purchase new copies with the same covers to act as replacements of sorts for when I have children of my own.
So, no, you’re not my favorite author anymore. You’re the inspiration for me to read and continue reading which, to me, is significantly more important.
