A QUESTION OF LUST
Nikki James is in San Francisco at the request of her partner and best friend, Jake. The wife of an old friend is missing, and Jake intends to find her—whatever the cost. The authorities believe the kidnappings to be the work of a sick mind, but Nikki knows that the truth is something much worse—especially since she seems to have an unexpected psychic link to the killer. But as always, she is more than willing to risk her own life to save another’s.
For Michael Kelly, Nikki’s bravado is a source of endless terror. He wants nothing more than to make Nikki a permanent part of his life, but he knows that her quest is sure to get her killed. As they chase through the sewers and tunnels of San Francisco and the body count begins to rise, Michael badgers her to stay off the case, but Nikki has no intention of complying. She wants him to realize that she’s either a full partner in his life or she’s out. But nothing prepares her for the price she has to pay for her stubbornness—the life of someone she loves.
This book was provided by the publisher (via NetGalley). This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Keri Arthur kept the pace of Hearts in Darkness going in this third installment of the Nikki & Michael series. The couple has had their ups and downs, especially as Michael is trying to do everything he can to keep Nikki safe, even if it means hiding his work from her. For anyone who read the first two books, you know that Nikki isn’t one to be left in the shadows when she can be doing something useful. Chasing the Shadows was a great continuation of this series and definitely made me want more.
Nikki and Michael are traveling once again, this time to San Francisco. After Michael is put on a case there, he arrives to find, to his surprise, Nikki. Her boss was there with his wife and murdered women had been turning up left and right–and Nikki couldn’t just let that happen. Together, she and Michael work to catch the killer before the next victim turns out to be someone close to them. Arthur creates this delicate weave of mystery and suspense with Chasing the Shadows. This book, in my opinion, was definitely darker than the first two and some scenes and descriptions made me cringe a bit. I don’t recommend this novel for the faint of heart as Arthur paints her scenes very vividly. Combined with the emotional attachment to these characters and what they’re going through on this case, Chasing the Shadows will make a big impact for readers of this series.
That being said, it was clear that there was a lot of development for the characters of this series, mainly Nikki, Michael, and Nikki’s boss Jake. I enjoyed that since it hadn’t been much of a focus for the first two books. As for the rest of the book, the plot was packed with action and thrills, but it did get a tad repetitive with each kidnapping. Each one occurred in roughly the same manner and was solved the same way. It wasn’t hard to get past that, though, as this is definitely a page-turner.
I apologize for the short review, but I don’t want to say too much more about this book since some of you may not have read the series yet. If you’ve been following Nikki and Michael’s adventures through Dancing with the Devil and Hearts in Darkness, you don’t want to miss Chasing the Shadows. You’re in for the ride of your life with book 3, and you’ll be wanting the next as soon as you finish. I can’t wait to read Kiss the Night Goodbye. For those of you looking for the next vampire series to read, check out the Nikki & Michael series by Keri Arthur. You’ll get your fill of the paranormal as well as romance, mystery, suspense, and action. I recommend these to readers who like real characters with real problems and no easy way out. This is a great series and I look forward to the final book.
