Nautical Novelties for Book Lovers & A Twisted Tale Giveaway

POSTED ON September 14, 2018 BY Austine IN Discussion, Giveaway

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m very excited to bring this oceanic post to you today. Disney Book Group is partnering with me for an AMAZING giveaway in honor of the release of PART OF YOUR WORLD, the next installment in the A Twisted Tale series! This one, as you may have guessed from the title, is all about The Little Mermaid and what would have happened if Ariel hadn’t defeated Ursula (cue evil laugh).

To celebrate the book’s release (out September 4th!) I’m sharing some of my favorite nautical novelties as well as a few seafaring novels to check out while you’re checking out PART OF YOUR WORLD!

love nautical/sea decor and stuff in general related to the sea, so today I thought I’d take a moment to talk about a few seafaring books to check out as well as products you might enjoy if you like The Little Mermaid!

Mugs

I. Love. Mugs. I collect them. They’re useful, perfect for coffee or hot chocolate (or tea, I suppose, if you’re one of those people 😉 ) which make excellent additions to a good book. Or great bookstagram props. All of the above?

THEY HAVE PURPOSE I SWEAR.

ANYwho, I’ve actually been eyeing up this adorablely ferocious looking octopus mug for a while (though wouldn’t mind seeing it in another color because me and pink just don’t really mix, you know).

Or perhaps you’re feeling a little. . . mermaid? This mug will send you fin over tail while drinking your morning coffee.

Bookends

If you’re lucky enough to have space on your bookshelves for bookends, you might appreciate these unique finds (I’m partial to the octopus ones myself, must have a bit of Ursula in me)

But perhaps you’re more of a captain than a sea creature so you might appreciate a beautiful new ship on the shelf horizon.

I also really liked this steampunk bookend featuring an octopus (this post is about the Little Mermaid and Ursula, right? I’ll get to the mermaid stuff soon). This adds character to your shelf.

Or if you prefer a splash of color, you can’t go wrong with sea horses (at least I don’t THINK you can. . . I could be wrong).

Set the Mood

I don’t know about y’all but when I’m reading, I love to be cozy with a soft blanket, maybe a candle burning, go all out with the nautical decor.

Let’s start by getting cozy with a couple mermaid blankets. Whether you want to curl up with a blanket or trade in your legs for a sea-worthy tail, these blankets might just do the trick!

Next, you’ll want to get a candle burning, like this aptly named “Mermaids Don’t Have a Thigh Gap” wax wonder (seriously, I love that name).

Then finally, make sure your room is ready with some fabulous kraken wall art that will make sure you’re ready to fight evil with Ariel or get into some tentacle fun with Ursula.

BUT. . . but you can’t just set the mood to read without the books! Here are a few of my recommendations to get you ready for a trip into the deep blue.

Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser

Though most of your literary trip will be on the river, you won’t want to miss the action and adventure of this YA fantasy. A bit of magic, plenty of swashbuckling fun, and characters you will absolutely LOVE (plus there’s a sequel so you can binge read the duology)!

Seafire by Natalie C. Parker

An all-female crew decides to take down the scourge of the sea in this tale of family, friendship, and what it takes to win the day. Featuring a a world both futuristic and archaic and a rescue mission you’ll want to dive right into, this one’s not to be missed.

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

A true pirate story, follow Alosa, the fierce pirate captain (akin to Captain Jack Sparrow) as she ventures across the sea, getting into dangerous situations and entertaining predicaments. Did I mention there’s a swoony love interest?? It’s a fun read that you’ll devour in one sitting.

And the star of the show, PART OF YOUR WORLD by Liz Braswell! This is the first I’ve read of the Twisted Tales from Disney and it definitely wasn’t what I expected. Be prepared, though, because while it was a decent read, it definitely wasn’t The Little Mermaid I remember as a kid.

What if Ariel had never defeated Ursula? Five years after the (twisted) events of the film, Ariel is now the queen of Atlantica, and Ursula is running Eric's kingdom on land. But when the sea witch threatens Atlantica once more, Ariel finds herself returning to a world (and a prince) she thought she'd left behind forever.
