All About Kim
Introduce us to your main character!
Jo Chastain’s mother trained her to be a con artist. When she witnesses her mother’s murder by an abusive boyfriend, she leaves Florida for Boston. She spends her days in a carrel at the Boston Public Library, and her nights in a tent she shares with a sweet boy called Wolf. Wolf loves Jo, but he can’t give her what she wants most: the safety of a family. The Tent City they lived in is dangerous, even for a savvy girl like Jo. So, she realizes it’s time for a fresh start, using the only skills she’s got. When she spots Temple Lovecraft in the library, it’s on!
Walk us through a day in the life of Kim Savage.
The second I get home from dropping my littlest at school I start writing. I don’t take my time lightly, because it ends at two o’clock. At the end of the day, I start again, working for about two hours. I also write on the weekends in whatever scraps of time I can manage. I’m a workaholic, but it’s ingrained in me: my dad was too. He passed last year, right after Beautiful Broken Girls came out, and I feel like I honor him by working harder. Does that make sense?
Lots of aspiring authors out there. Any advice for them?
I don’t agree that you have to write what you know, but you absolutely have to write what you love. I love visceral suspense, the kind that gives you palpitations reading, that make you tense as the story builds. I hope that’s how readers feel reading my stories.
I know asking someone’s all-time favorite book is a loaded question so what’s your current favorite read?
Alright, the ultimate question: why should we read your book?
Because In Her Skin is about what it means to have power associated with class. The Lovecrafts have it. Jo, living in one of Boston’s tent cities, doesn’t. We don’t like talking about class distinctions, but when power depends on them, we should. Otherwise we don’t stand a chance of solving the imbalances that go along with them. Books like In Her Skin can keep the conversation going.
Describe yourself in 3 words.
Cerebral, Clumsy, Crushing hard on Cillian Murphy. Does the last one count? Also, I like alliteration.
What is your most embarrassing memory?
Tumbling down the stairs at my prom in a very big dress.
What is your Hogwarts/Ilvermorny house?
Ravenclaw and Horned Serpent. I’d love to know how many air signs (I’m a classic Libra) are sorted the same.
Your characters are sent into the Hunger Games. Who wins?
Temple and Jo are evenly matched. My characters are survivors. It’s a draw.
A famous movie producer wants to make your books into movies and they want you to cast your characters. Which actors/actresses make the cut?
Temple: Saoirse Ronan
Gerry: Daniel Kaluuya
You just won America’s Got Talent. What’s your talent?
My talent are not telegenic. No one wants to see someone bang at the computer. Pass.
Coffee or tea?
It’s eleven AM and I’m on my third Americano, so.
Best ice cream flavor ever?
Pistachio. Yet I hate the nut.
Your theme song/personal anthem?
Celebrity Skin by Hole. I was an angry nineties girl.
“I wanted to write a voice that for me, as a reader, had been missing from the chorus: the voice of an angry woman.” —Claire Messud
What is one piece of advice you would tell everyone?
Resist all the forces conspiring to quash your creativity. They’re out there; don’t be fooled.

Sixteen-year-old con artist Jo Chastain is about to take on the biggest scam of her life: impersonating a missing girl. Life on the streets of Boston these past few years hasn’t been easy, and Jo is hoping to cash in on a little safety, a little security. She finds her opportunity in the Lovecrafts, a wealthy family with ties to the unsolved disappearance of Vivienne Weir, who vanished when she was nine.
When Jo takes on Vivi’s identity and stages the girl’s miraculous return, the Lovecrafts welcome her back with open arms. They give her everything she could want: love, money, and proximity to their intoxicating and unpredictable daughter, Temple. But nothing is as it seems in the Lovecraft household—and some secrets refuse to stay buried. As hidden crimes come to the surface, and lines of deception begin to blur, Jo must choose to either hold onto an illusion of safety, or escape the danger around her before it’s too late.
