When Life Gives You Lemons, Don’t Forget Sugar (Twitter Update + #Giveaway)

POSTED ON September 14, 2017 BY Austine IN Update

I woke up this morning at approximately 6am to learn that my Twitter account had been hacked.

At first, I thought it was a glitch. Each morning I try to fill up my Buffer queue with 10 posts for the day because I know that I likely won’t have time to post regularly, especially when I have classes all morning and work for most of the afternoon/evening. But when I went to get on this morning, I found that I’d been locked out. I tried logging in on one of my laptops (didn’t work). Tried resetting the password (didn’t work). Tried my second laptop (I have a work/school one and one that I can’t remove from its charger). I was able to get on in my browser there because I hadn’t closed it before putting my computer to sleep last night.

I immediately contacted support, checked online, looked through help forums, whatever I could find.

The end result? I have to make a new Twitter if I want to be involved on that platform.

Now, considering how much I use Twitter, it might be surprising to hear that I debated whether it was worth it or not. Lately I avoid Twitter more than I seek it out like I used to because the world’s falling apart, the YA community is a roller coaster of messiness, and I have enough going on in my life that I don’t need either of those things adding on.

I did think about taking this as an opportunity to leave the Twitter community for good but realized that a) I wouldn’t like that down the road, and b) y’all love Twitter and I want to be able to talk/interact with you.

So. I’m attempting to view this annoyance, this frustration, this I’m-really-angry-about-this-but-don’t-know-what-to-call-it thing, as something positive. A fresh start where I can ignore all the silly things I tweeted when I started out on Twitter and focus in on what matters.

If you followed me on my now-old account, I encourage you to follow me on the new one (linked below). Twitter Support will be deleting the compromised account within 24 hours and I’ll be switching that username over to this new account so I didn’t want to list my placeholder handle here just yet (I’ll update this post with a link once it’s all finalized).

Follow me on my new account!

I’m terribly sorry this happened and any inconveniences it’s caused y’all. And a second apology to those who entered my giveaway for the ARC or pre-order of AN ENCHANTMENT OF RAVENS. Because of this, I will be re-running the giveaway with an extension. You’ll have to re-enter but the same rules will apply. You can enter below or head to my new Twitter profile.

Thank you everyone for your understanding and patience. I’m not happy about this but hope that something good can still come of it.

  1. I am surprised they didn’t offer a recovery method. Mine was hacked over a year ago and I was able to answer security questions and provide my email and change my password.
