An Unplanned NOT-Hiatus Thing Announcement

POSTED ON July 23, 2017 BY Austine IN Update

Alright, friends, I need to chat with y’all for a moment here.

For those who don’t follow me on social media, or haven’t seen me talk about it before, I am a grad student. It’s a place in my life that I always planned to be at and this coming semester (which starts in August) and the one after are my final two before I head out into the world.

Before all that, I have a big research paper due in the next couple weeks, and also need to get my Master’s paper into motion.

All that work means less reading time. Less socializing time. Less…time.

But I have no intentions of taking a hiatus from blogging. I’m not sure I really could, to be perfectly honest, at least not right now. I love it too much and I can still manage it though perhaps not at quite the same pace as I’m keeping right now.

It does, however, mean I’ll be making a few changes to my blogging habits.

First and foremost, I will be pulling back a bit from social media. I may be scheduling postings to go live throughout the day ahead of time but it doesn’t mean I’ll necessarily be around. I’ll respond to messages, of course, though may be delayed in responding to comments as I don’t get notifications on my phone for those.

My workload is a huge reason why I need to cut back on my media time but I’m also not dealing with book twitter very well at the moment.

I’ve posted time and again about Book Twitter. It’s not what it once was and the toxicity is dangerous to my mental health. No matter where I look someone is bashing someone else over something. Whether it’s warranted or not. I’m sick of it, sick of seeing this community divide into little subgroups that protect their own but keep to themselves, tired of seeing attacks instead of discussion. This isn’t limited to just one topic either.

More and more, I’ve noticed that I’ve retreated into DMs with people that I enjoy talking to because looking at my feed just makes me feel disappointed in parts of this community.

So. I won’t be around as much on Twitter, but you’re welcome to message me. My DMs are open. And I will see those before anything else. I plan to remain fairly active on instagram as I can usually plan those posts in advance, and I’ll be posting at least a couple times a week (hopefully) here on the blog, if not more frequently.

I just wanted to share with y’all since that certainly wasn’t going to fit neatly in 140 characters or less. Please feel free to chat with me if you have any questions, comments, concerns, etc.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

  1. Oh my goodness, I’m glad it’s not just me! I’m writing my MA dissertation at the moment and just have found I’ve given up practically all my hobbies as when I do have the time, I’m too exhausted. I’m going to let my blog drift for a bit, just glad that I had posts scheduled to get me a bit further but it’s stressing me too much. Good luck with everything!

    • Nope, not just you! And yes, I’m in the same boat. I’ve put off so many things I want to do because of school work, it’s crazy! Good luck with your work as well!!

  2. I completely agree about Twitter and it is very sad that it is like that now. You have to do what is best for you as far as social media and blogging. Congratulations on getting this far! You are going to do awesome things because it seems like you have great determination! Your blog is awesome and so well organized, so I can assume you are kicking butt in school! Keep up the great work and best wishes to you in everything!! I look forward to keeping up with you and your blogging and hearing about your success after grad school!

  3. Good luck. I just graduated in the fall and I know balancing both a blog and school is: it’s hard! But I got into debt for one reason, and that’s so I could teach! I love blogging but it’s not a career path. I work two jobs now just to wait until the semester starts and I can go back to where I belong. The bookstore part time is fun but my other job isn’t.
So you do you and we will be right here.
And I know all about drama on Twitter – stay out of it! It’s only going to bring you down. 😔.

    • Exactly. This is fun, but at the end of the day it’s a hobby. I currently work 2 jobs plus have grad school going on so things can get busy but it’s nice to have a creative outlet like this, even if I have to pull back every now and then for life reasons! 🙂

  4. Good luck with your thesis! As a graduate school survivor, I understand how hard it is to balance school, life, and any other activities you do just to keep your sanity. I couldn’t imagine trying to keep up a blog while I was working on my dissertation.

I have been hearing a lot lately about the toxicity growing in the book blogging community, which makes me very sad because I’m in my first year as a book blogger. Although, I haven’t seen anything bad yet, so I guess that’s the upside to being a small newbie blogger.

    • Thank you! It’s been an… interesting experience so far. The real test will definitely be when I’m student teaching…

That’s good! Hopefully you miss all of it because it doesn’t contribute anything to blogging or the community.
