Make sure to check out the full interview, along with information on the first book in this series, The Sixth Domicile, and who knows? There may be a giveaway involved as well…
Without further adieu, please help me welcome Courtney Ruggles, author of The Sixth Domicile and The Vrai Domicile!
All About You
You wrote a book! That’s pretty awesome. Why don’t you tell us a bit about what inspired The Sixth Domicile?
The Sixth Domicile originated as a short story in a creative writing class in high school! The teacher prompted us to write about a place that didn’t exist, and I thought of this society that was so oppressed, they couldn’t show their face, their skin, or any individuality. I worked on it for nine years before finishing it, and as a personal goal to submit it to a publisher, I did. I didn’t expect it to be picked up immediately, but Elephantine, who is my publisher, wanted it and it flourished into The Domicile Series!
Introduce us to your main character!
Q437B is this girl whose thoughts and imagination cannot be contained by the Domicile’s oppressiveness. She starts just as a girl who loves someone whom she’s not allowed to love, and that is her main focus. Though she is twenty, she’s still immature and naive. But she grows into this fierce, snarky girl. And she likes who she is. Most of the time.
Walk us through a day in the life of Courtney Ruggles.
Oh man! My life is crazy!! I have a toddler who I spend most of my day with. I work mostly from home, so I’m often on my computer, but that only happens after my baby boy is asleep. I have a photography business I run and am also a part-time professor at a university where I teach psychology, sociology, and social work. I am also getting my doctorate right now. Plus being a wife to an amazingly supportive husband. Did I say my life is crazy? I didn’t even mention that I write books!
Lots of aspiring authors out there. Any advice for them?
I feel like I still am one! My advice is go for it. You have a story, write it, and if you want it published, then go for it! Go indie, go traditional, go small publishing house. Whatever fits you and just do it! And do it to the very best you can do! Being published isn’t just writing the book, the most fun part, and it gets rough and tiring at times. But you’re story is worth it, so just do it!
I know asking someone’s all-time favorite book is a loaded question so what’s your current favorite read?
Oh geesh! That’s still a loaded question! I’ve really enjoyed the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. I’m waiting on the next book. I’m reading Scott Westerfeld’s Peeps which I’m really enjoying.
Alright, the ultimate question: why should we read your book?
Well, it’s new adult dystopia! Most of the mainstream dystopias are YA, so it’s a different subgenre which doesn’t have a lot out there yet. And it’s mixed with an intense romance if you like that. Plus, people wear cool masks!
Now for the Fun…
What is your most embarrassing memory?
I have many of those, so I will tell you a funny story. I have two fake teeth and when I first got my flipper (a retainer kind of thing with my fake teeth on it that I can take out) I was at my cousin’s house with her husband, my husband, and her sister. While eating a Frito, one of my fake teeth broke off and somehow flew under the fouton I was sitting on. My cousin’s sister did a perfect slide underneath it, and then held my tooth high above her head shouting, “I got it!” Laughing, I took it back and glued it back on my retainer. But I had to eat chips without my teeth that night.
What is your Hogwarts house?
I always thought I would be Gryffindor, but I’m Ravenclaw!
Your characters are sent into the Hunger Games. Who wins?
Q437B obviously! But her and B116A would totally pull off the Katniss and Peeta scandal, so they both win.
Radioactive space rock fell from the sky and turned you into a superhero/villain. Tell us your new name, describe your powers, and what does your costume look like?
Oh my gosh! I am Can Read Your Mind Court and obviously, I can read anyone’s mind. But I wouldn’t tell anyone and not have a costume so that way I can read people’s minds without them knowing. Sneaky sneaky.
This morning you woke up with the ability to time travel to only one time period. Where (or more accurately “when”) would you go?
You probably expect me to say some era, but actually I would time travel back to when my grandmother and grandfather were alive. That way I can see them again and talk to them about life, get their advice, and see them again.
Coffee or tea?
Oh, hands down coffee. I am a coffee lover. I drink more coffee than water. I’m trying to rectify that addiction.
Best ice cream flavor ever?
I am in love with Reese Cup Blizzards from Dairy Queen. But also, there’s this kind of local place which serves custard and it’s ah-mazing!!!!
What is one piece of advice you would tell everyone?
Follow your dreams! I feel like a poster child for that. I have two degrees, almost three, so I can be a college professor and I’m doing that. I’ve always wanted to publish books, and now I’m doing that. I loved photography, never had training, worked my butt off and learned, and now I have my own business. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I worked my butt off for the things I’ve accomplished and anyone can do that. I absolutely believe that. Make your goals, work hard, and never quit. I’ve wanted to so many times, but don’t ever quit. Because you’ll make it happen, you’ll always find a way to make it happen. Do what you want to do, and just make it happen!!

Genres: Dystopian, New Adult
In a future ravaged by greed and war, The Domicile has emerged. A new civilization governed by clandestine Elders where citizens are united by white masks and uniform identities. To remove one’s mask, to go outside the Domicile, to show defiance, means being sent to the Meurtre, a horrifying death sentence.
Q437B doesn’t follow the rules. She craves sunlight, dares to love her childhood friend B116A, and–the most forbidden of all–has seen the true face of her beloved beneath his mask.
But when Q becomes an Adulte, The Domicile threatens to take away everything that makes her happy. She is forced to marry an abusive soldier who demands she conform.
Whispers spread about the unconventional lessons she teaches her new students. And when Q openly disobeys the Elders, the people become restless, questioning the truth of the world in the wake of such defiance.
Rumblings of discontent stir as others begin to follow the path toward their freedom. The Revolution has begun, and Q is the spark that ignited the flames.
